Despite being an aspiring filmmaker, my theatre lecturers opened my eyes to this bigger world that was unknown to me and changed my perspective on what it means to be an artist. To be an artist and an overall global citizen, it is important to have people around you who challenge you, humble you, build you and embrace you. I am glad I have found an environment that has allowed me the space to grow, learn and maximise my potential at this stage of my life.

The Diploma in Nursing programme at Sunway University has been a very big learning curve for me. It has taught me to become a stronger, more independent and caring individual. It has also taught me to strengthen my power of observation. It is a bittersweet journey of trials and learning to weather through storms but in the end, we get to appreciate the rainbow that comes after the storm, which is seeing our patients smile and go home to their families safe and sound, or making a difference to the lives of those who are suffering. All in all, this course has given me an opportunity to experience things beyond what I had imagined.

Upon deciding to take up the Diploma in Culinary Arts programme in Sunway University I knew it was the right choice as soon as the first semester began. It was overwhelmingly fun and motivating! When the course has completed, I decided to try my hand in a side bakery business, where I bake delicious goodies. I also decided to try my hand in a managerial role in at TGIF Malaysia. I was initially hired as a Supervisor and began training, and by the end of the year I had already moved up to Assistant Manager of the Sunway Pyramid outlet. Another 6 months later I received an offer from Good Gourmet Sdn Bhd, the company that franchises Fish n Co Malaysia and was hired as a Restaurant Manager. Six months later, my career continued to grow and I was selected to be the second Operation Manager for the company. Truly, I owe it all to what I have learnt at Sunway University. My current work entails overseeing the 4 outlets in Malaysia which include tasks such as day to day operations, staffing, food quality and store upkeep.

The Diploma was a great platform in providing the skills and background for the events industry as it exposes students to both theory and practice with internship opportunities. The programme allowed me to be exposed to a little of everything and I particularly enjoyed that we were given the opportunity to organise our own charity events. Anyone can run an event but to be quick thinking, multi-tasked and have good attention to details, to be frantically dealing with problems backstage while at the same time maintaining a calm composure in front of the clients and guests; these come with experience, and the programme at Sunway prepared me well when I stepped into the industry. Today, I am the PR and Communication Manager for LVMH Perfumes and Cosmetics. Although events management is no longer my day-to-day responsibility, it has trained me to be adaptable to situations and thorough in my work as I treat all my tasks as part of an event. It has also helped in my creativity to think out of the box and handle situations from more than one angle whilst being a team player.

The knowledge I have gained allowed me to perform my tasks and expedited my career growth. I was also selected and am the youngest millennial in the M?venpick Hotel & Resorts for the committee known as Excom Y, allowing me to travel the world and be heard by the CEO and Presidents based in other areas. Today, I am the youngest female in hotel management as the manager of brand and quality assurance, putting in place the things I have learned during the three years in Sunway University. A dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.

The Diploma in Hotel Management has given me the opportunity to experience all facets of the hospitality industry, where I discovered my passion for cooking. I have gained knowledge in so many areas I had never even known existed within the umbrella of the hospitality industry. The most memorable part of my studies was the experience gained in the University’s world-renowned hospitality and culinary department. The experiences gained enabled me to attain employment internationally. The special set of skills learnt at the University also assisted me in growing as a person, as I learnt the importance of time management and relationship management.

During my few years as a student in BMKT, I have discovered that the programme does not only provide me academic lessons that merely serve to be used theoretically but also practically. The course has opened my eyes to what is going on in the industry through the intensive amount of research encouraged to be done in assignments as well as through lecturers with past work experience. I have also found many opportunities within the course of this time, such as visiting a customer experience conference under the supervision of a lecturer with other students. Other than that, there was also a time I worked for my lecturer as a student assistant to his research. That gave me more insight in the research field of marketing. Overall, BMKT provides a holistic learning experience for students to learn more about what marketing is from a broader perspective.

On my first day of degree orientation, I thought to myself - BAF will never be as fun and interesting as my foundation course, let’s just get this over with. But as I went through the course, it was the exact opposite.

Being the typical introvert, I dare not speak up during lecture classes when the lecturers are having discussions with the students. Today, I no longer fear public speaking, thanks to the guidance and push from all of the lecturers in BAF. They’ll guide you to learn independently and try to know you deep down and engage personally with you. Up till today, what I missed most is the conversations I had with my lecturers in their office, and I will go back occasionally to catch up with these awesome people. Apart from that, the knowledge that I’ve gained throughout BAF has been a strong foundation for me, and prepared me well to complete my ICAEW certification with ease. And the most important lesson that BAF has taught me is to be humble and learn from anyone, be it your senior, or even your junior. Without all these learnings, I will never be who I am, where I am today, and I am proud to be a BAF alumni. Selecting BAF over other professional courses has been the best decision I have ever made. It is time to make yours.

This programme has strongly convinced me of the vitality of data to every organisation whether big or small businesses, educational institutions, government branches, public sectors, utilities and so on. The subjects link with each other so well; they overlay several aspects such as the need for knowledge in economy, the call to ethical behaviours in handling data, the significance of using the correct data, the different methods to analyse and interpret data and how data can be used for the benefit of the public. Besides educating me, I’m grateful to the lecturers for pumping in effort to educate me on current events related to big data and for encouraging me to attend talks and seminars relating to big data.
